  • 2011 – Nampula, Mozambique – Gracinda Samuel is a 16 year old from Namicopo, she just gave birth to her first baby boy at the Maternity service of the Nampula Central Hospital. In 2003 the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), an international development agency that promotes the right of every woman, man and child to enjoy a life of health and equal opportunity, and its partners launched a global Campaign to End Fistula with the goal of making obstetric fistula as rare in developing countries as it is in the industrialized world. The Campaign is now working in 50 countries in Africa, Latin America, Asia and the Arab region. Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused when a woman or girl suffers from prolonged obstructed labor and is unable to access emergency obstetric care – notably, a caesarean section, in time. The woman is left with chronic incontinence and, in most cases, a stillborn baby. An estimated 3.5 million women and adolescent girls are affected by obstetric fistula in developing countries and up to 100,000 new cases occur annually. Jacob Andarusse Daude is a 32 year old man from Ilha de Mozambique. He is a doctor in Preventive Medecine and has practiced for 11 years. Muaija Aly is a 21 year old woman from Jambesse (Ilha de Mozambique). She came to the Mozambique Island Hospital because her 9 months baby boy, Cassimo Aly, is ill with chickenpox. The Mozambique Island Hospital, the first one built in the country back in the the 19th century, serves a population of more than 50,000. With just one doctor, the hospital counts on nurses and assistants to provide care for patients referred from various communities in a 20 km radius. A world heritage site, the hospital has seen little investment in the last years and has serious infra structure problems. There is no electricity and all equipment is manual. In the maternity ward, 10 beds receive both pregnant women and the sick, who are treated by four midwives and a few nurses. No surgeries can be performed here. Samuel Herman Mluge (51yrs) an albino rights activist in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania and his wife Teresa January (46 yrs) have five children, all with albinism. Albinism is a recessive gene but when two carriers of the gene have a child it has a one in four chance of getting albinism. Tanzania is believed to have Africa' s largest population of albinos, a genetic condition caused by a lack of melanin in the skin, eyes and hair and has an incidence seven times higher than elsewhere in the world. Over the last three years people with albinism have been threatened by an alarming increase in the criminal trade of Albino body parts. At least 53 albinos have been killed since 2007, some as young as six months old. Many more have been attacked with machetes and their limbs stolen while they are still alive. Witch doctors tell their clients that the body parts will bring them luck in love, life and business. The belief that albino body parts have magical powers has driven thousands of Africa's albinos into hiding, fearful of losing their lives and limbs to unscrupulous dealers who can make up to US$75,000 selling a complete dismembered set. The killings have now spread to neighbouring countries, like Kenya, Uganda and Burundi and an international market for albino body parts has been rumoured to reach as far as West Africa. She lives with her 2 year old albino son, Yusufu Sereman, in a 6 m2 rented room in Dar es Salaam. When she gave birth to Yusufu, her husband got very angry and left her saying that she had slept with a musungu, a white man. Since then, she has never heard from him. Mwanahawa survives as a single parent roasting and selling Cassava and other small food items. Her son Selemani already has badly damaged skin from exposure to the sun, but she cant get him treat because she has difficulties to pay for the treatments. Usually developing by a very young age a facial rash of dark melanomas is often the precursor of the skin cancer that kills so many albinos in early adulthood.
