On December 2013, Oscar was first admitted to the hospital with diabetic ketoacidosis and weighed 264 pounds. He was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus type 2, Metabolic Syndrome, fatty liver disease, cholesterol, hypertriglyceridemia, Dyslipidemia, systemic arterial hypertension and started to use insulin injections to treat diabetes. On May 2015, Oscar weighed 312.4 pounds. As he applied to get bariatric surgery, Oscar has lost 26 pounds during this last month, and today weighs 288 pounds. Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally. Mexico has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, and public health officials are increasingly alarmed by the rapid rise in child and youth obesity. Photo by Bénédicte Desrus
