August 13, 2011 – Ukunda, Kenya – Omari Kisaga is a 53 year old man from Kenya with obesity. He says he thinks he weighs 170 kilos. He can’t afford to go to an hospital so he uses natural medicines and plants to cope with obesity related symptoms. He learned the traditional healing techniques from his grandfather. He says "Being big is not healthy, because you can’t really work, you can’t walk. He has no money so he just eat anything he find". Obesity is no longer a problem confined to wealthy nations. In Africa, an increasing number of people can be categorised as obese. In some African cultures, being fat is a symbol of good life, prestige and wealth. Photo credit: Benedicte Desrus
